Vietnam Tourism Gets a Push
Vietnam will pump in a dramatically increased amount to achieve the
tourism sector's programs for the next three years, a conference in
HCM City heard on Monday. In a departure from the previous two years,
when it provided a mere VND27 billion (US$1.8 million) to the sector,
the Government has earmarked VND441 billion ($30 million) to help
carry out a tourism national action program through 2005.
Announcing this, Deputy Head of the Vietnam National Administration
of Tourism (VNAT), Nguyen Phu Duc, said that of the amount, the State
would provide 38.5 per cent, businesses, 45.7 per cent, and local
administrations, 15.7 per cent. Besides the increase in amount, this
also marks a shift in policy, which now welcomes investments from the
corporate sector and provinces. It will focus on developing
infrastructure, improving the quality and diversity of tourism
products, increasing investment in marketing and promotional
campaigns, promoting tourism abroad, and strengthening management,
and co-ordination between, Government agencies and local bodies.
The industry targets growth of between 10 and 15 per cent, reaching
3.5 million foreign visitors by 2005. It will also aim for a 5 per
cent growth in the domestic market, to reach between 15 and 16
million travelers in 2005.
Revenue from tourism is projected to go up to VND2-2.5 trillion
(US$130-170 million) a year by 2005, in addition to creating direct
and indirect employment for a further 620,000 people. Last year,
foreign arrivals in Vietnam increased by 9 per cent to 2.3 million.
Japanese arrivals rose 42 per cent, South Korean, by 40 per cent, and
Australians by 23 per cent. Domestic traveler numbers increased 4 per
cent to 11.7 million. Vietnam over VND20,500 billion (US$1.36
billion) from tourism.
